Paints
All of my paintings have been done with the Apple Barrel paints since I started painting. At 97¢ each they are affordable, only problem I have with them is the blob you get after a while, one friend called the blob boogers. But anyway I like the way they work.
I tried to use the big tubes of the brand Basic but I didn't like the consistency, it's like trying to paint with glue even with a wet brush. I've also tried the latex brand but I'm not really sold on it I was only able to afford the small tubes.
So I guess the brand Apple barrel is still the best for me even with the boogers.

Advise
Now I am telling you about her because she gave me advise once about painting, and drawing. So let me share what she said, "If you need a ruler, use it. If you need a template, use it. If you need a picture take a good one and use it. Yes there are plenty of people who can draw a straight line free hand or paint a picture from memory but if you can't its okay. Never let anyone tell you that you are not an artist because you can't paint from memory or you need a ruler." Of course she also said "Don't tell anyone", but I see a lot of people using these items and not having an problems doing it.
Oh, and one more thing, never let anyone compare your work with anyone else work. My younger brother used to do that to me, his friend is good at drawing so my brother would brag about his work and try and challenge me to do the same, and tell me my work wasn't the same. Well Duh, I'm not him and he's not me. Until one day my sister-in-law told me that I could do more drawings then my brother's friend, by the way my brother's friend became my brother's brother-in-law. So I learned he is great at cartoon characters and animals but he can't draw people, which I can do all three.
Another issue some else had with my work, was when I wanted to paint a person I would sketch out the person on the canvas then I would go back and darken the best line with a pen or paint and erase the others to me that helped me with the final decision on where the arm would go or what not. But this friend of mine hated when I would do that, she told me it make my work look cheap and she thought I should learn how to create shadows and folds in the clothes instead of my lines. So I use to get mad at myself when I would catch myself doing it but now I've learned that that would be part of my style and not to be ashamed of what one person doesn't like. Beside they aren't buying my work.

mapping out
I find this very helpful to be able to plan a painting before you actually put it on the canvas. I have seen this before, but never really thought to do it. I know there are many people who like to paint just from their memory and know where everything will go but if you are like I me I tend to forget and make everything too large.

study
Earlier I referred to Walter Foster books is a great way to teach yourself how to draw and paint. They have plenty of different artists in each book, if you were to do a Google search for each artist you would see their artwork that is not in the books, including Walter Foster himself. I also suggested earlier to study artwork of the greats, but you can study the artwork of these artists featured in these Walter Foster books. You can also choose any artist that catches your eye and style that you were interested in and that way you can come up with your own style of work.
Recently what I have learned is that if you stray from your paintings and drawings and pick up another habit or hobby. Do not feel bad about it, for example, for a while I stopped painting and started to try to sculpt in clay and papier-mâché. Then I moved to photography, which I must say I am better at photography than sculptures, however, it is okay because both are part of the arts and still a creative way to express you. I have learned that one New Mexico artist puts down his paintbrush and picks up a guitar and writes his own songs, which is still a creative expression.
